CBs in Morocco

5 vehicles off to Morrocco in May. All have CBs which get used a lot when in convoy, but it seems that they are illegal when in Morocco- is this correct?

if we don't get them nabbed at the border then will we haev any problems when in country?

We neither had a problem entering Tanger in July 2008. 4 verhicles all with big CB antennas.
Apperantly they stopped asuming all foreign verhicles with CB's being enemies of the state.

I did read of one account where the travellers were caught using walkie talkies between vehicles at the actual border, but this was a few years ago. Link below contains details...

We use them all the time in Maroc.

I've heard (though not had confirmed) that they are illegal. We keep them hidden going in, and don't use them in front of the cops, army, etc.

As long as you're not using them in sensitive areas, be prudent and you'll be ok - I'd imagine the worst is that you could get them confiscated. Though I'm not an expert in Moroccan Law, so don't try to sue me from the floor of your stinkin' Risani cell...

Nick.

Illegal, but rarely a problem

Unless you are using a UHF frequency, with a max power of 500mW or less (that's half a watt!), then you need an operator's licence from the country from which you are transmitting. That's it.

The reality is that we have never had a problem yet despite using HF antennas over 5 m in length!

Pack the gear away for the border crossings, and try not to use them at all at any police etc. checks and you'll probably be okay.

Safe travels, Sam.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
