Carnet for Mauritanie? - Horizons Unlimited

Hello all,

Do we need a carnet for Mauritanie?

Or can we go without and what we do than?
It's a lot of money and it is for 1 country only. The embassy says we need one.

it is not required, but i've read somewhere that it IS required since a few months.

Anyone for a final quote?

This message is based upon experience from January '01. I do not know whether it has changed in the mean time.

If you travel by car, the embassy (at least the Belgian) indeed requires your 'Carnet de Passage' in order issue a visa.
You can avoid this by either:
-/ get one at Rabat .
-/ buy your visa at the border of Mauritania. Somewhat more expensive (40? Euro per adult)

So that would mean that as long as you get your visa in Morocco or at the border, a carnet is NOT required?

I obtained Mauritanian visas from the embassy in London in August 2001. There was no requirement for carnets then.

I crossed in March 2001. No carnet was required to get the visa, or at the border. They do write your vehicle details in your passport though. Of course, it might have changed since.

I am planning a trip into Mauritania end December 2001. The Dutch automobile association and the Mauritanian embassy in Brussels tell me a Carnet is necessary at the moment. Can somebody tell me if this is correct or not?

In spite of what the Dutch Automobile Association tell (if you take them serious an overlandtrip to Africa would be impossible) you dont need a carnet de passage for Mauritania. For some reason the Mauritanian embassy in Brussels seems to be bad informed. If you want a visa dont say you enter by land. Say that you will arrive at Nouakchott Airport by one of the two weekly Air France-flights. At the border you'll be handed a form in wich you declare not to sell your car without informing the customs. They will also put a stamp in your passport. You can nevertheless sell your car in Mauritania. You'll get a stamp wich wil decharge the first stamp. Never accept deals in wich the buyer proposes to join you to the border in Rosso or the dam at Diama. In most cases that came to my ear the seller lost car and money

When did you last enter Mauritania? I've done it several times with succes (guess, with and without a carnet but there never was a must on the carnet) but heard now that the convoi isn't necessary anymore and because of the fact that people try to sell there cars without paying import duties they have implemented this new "must" rule on the Carnet
