Carne de passage in Egypt?

Hi guys!

Me and a couple of friends are going to drive down through Afrika with start in January 2012. The thing is, I dont understand how people get through Egypt with car? We are arriving from Israel and Depart to Sudan. The thing is when i contacted our national automobile association here in sweden they told me that the deposit you have to make for the carne is 300% of the value of the car as new.

Is there a way to get around this problem or do you have to pay the whole thing? Maybe geting the carne form somewhere else or anything? How did you guys do it?

Thanks for the replies!

Egypt is the most expensive place in the world to get a carnet for, it is a higher percentage in the UK but at the second hand value, it varies from one organisation to another. Either way it will be irrelevant if you have been through Israel, they won't let you into Sudan after that.

Yes, passing through Israel is the main problem. Even with two passports, the Sudanese will find out you passed through that country, beacuse you have a Taba entry stamp for Egypt for example, and will not let you enter. That's why most people still try to pass through Syria.

Hi all,
Thanks for all the tips. We are now considering to get the boat over Med. sea as well. So at this point some information about the Carne would be nice.

Forget the boat, no boat at the moment..!

Unless things would have changed radically, there's no ferry service coming to Egypt for the time being. At best a RORO, with a number of complications. I submitted a number of informations on other threads, please do take the time to dig and find. I'm in Egypt at the moment and trust me this is not a simple country to enter a car in even with privileges, I actually fear the day I'll be getting it out. Same for the bike, not simple, and expensive, but wow, what a place to enjoy when you're out there on dunes.

In a nutshell, just do it! Provide the deposit they ask, it's worth it as it's a deposit only and not a tax unless you screw up right. If Egypt is above availability of budget, I'd suggest to sail to Port Sudan if possible, or even further to Djibouti and then enter Ethiopia. You can also sail to Mombassa and drive on from there. The choice is yours, so consider entering Egypt but I'd recommend to plan for serious fun time traveling the country to cover for the extra hassles...and there are many..! Enjoy.

We've met people in Jordan who have come from Sudan via Jiddah in Saudi Arabia to miss Egypt.
You would think there would be ships going from Aquaba to Egypt.
It's so close to the east coast, just down the gulf!
Maybe you should try freight shipping companies. It might be possible to use a container from Aquaba to Egypt.
Regarding Syria. You could always enter Syria in the east, go down to DierAzore, Palmyra, through the desert to Bosra, then cross to Jordan.
That way you would be well away from the aggro in the west of the country where all the population is.
Persistence.
