camping in dunes in morocco

I'm going to be in Morocco for new years eve and would really like to camp out in the dunes, i was thinking erg chebbi or erg chigaga are the most likely candidates for the proper desert feel but am i likely to be run over by marauding 4x4's in the night?

thanks,
ted

No problems for sleeping there, there are no marrauding 4x4 in the dunes at night, if you are really in the dunes. On the border of the dunes it is different.
Erg Chebbi or Chegaga, you have "official" camp sites, but you can go on your own in a remote place where you will be alone... much more fantastic!

Erg Chegaga going from East to West: you are on the most difficult way (but it is possible); the dunes are easyer from West to East.

New years eve in Morocco in the desert... it will be very cold. You will need a lots of wood for the fire.

or a good sleeping bag:thumbup1:

we often had 5 or 6 degree minus(!) at the night in the sahara and we celebrated the new jear at 9, because it was to cold to be outside.:funmeterno:

Hi,Erg Chebbi and Erg Chegaga are the famous dunes in the area. However, there are two other dunes in the great south b/w merzouga and Zagora which are the dunes of Ouzina and Hi Remlia. The laters are special as they are not crowded with people. You can expect very low temperature ,as soemtimes it arrives to 0 C° and in summer it arrives to 51 C°.Enjoy your time and choose
Cheers

At Erg Chebbi you may get marauding quad bikes from the local hotels; they sometimes stay out after dark, although you probabley wouldn't be disturbed after about 8pm. I was there last month and yes it will be pretty cold.

A good idea if camping on the lee side of a dune is to put a marker at the top of the ridge - a stake with a (light coloured) tee-shirt will do, or a shovel etc - depending on what you have with you... so it can be seen by anyone heading your way...

In rallyes, drivers/riders usually put their helmet on the ridge of a dune if they have a problem on the far side - hopefully so other competitors will avoid them - but a fluttering tee-shirt is more likely to catch the attention at night...
