Camping Desert Club Douz open again for business

FYI: the legendary Desert Club campsite in Douz (Tunisia) has closed it gates indefinitely. Apparantly there's been some disagreement between the owner of the land and the tenant as a result of which they have closed for the time being. There are two other campsites, the guarded but not locked camping municipale on the road to Matmata (4 TDN per person, motorcycle free) about 2km out of town, and one at a hotel in the zone touristique even further out of town (5 TDN per person, 5 TDN per motorcycle, no sign, no name, locked at night but not guarded). Right now the best bet for motorcycle travellers is the Hotel 20 Mars near the town square.

TITLE CHANGED AS PER UPDATED POST FROM APRIL 2013. SEE BELOW.

Hi MJ,

Is that intel from yourself?

If so, how is the situation around the areas Douz, Tataouine?
Is it safe of is there still some unrest? Did you travel alone, in group or organised?

Still planning my '12 Tunisia Easter 4x4 trip....

It is. We went there and the gate was closed with a note that said it was closed. We talked to the site guard and learned what I stated above. He did also say that they were hoping to open again soon(ish) but wasn't able to give any sort of time frame.

We travelled alone and felt safe all the time, from Tunis to Tabarka, from Ksar Ghilane to Tataouine, Mides, etc. Never felt uneasy or in any sort of danger or trouble. That said we did leave the country the night before the election so things might have changed since.

Desert Camping Club in Tunisia is open.

I know this is an old thread but looking for information regarding camping in Tunisia brought this post up and we wrongfully thought this wonderful site was still closed - when it's not.

We just spent three great days in Douz at Desert Camping Club and highly recommend it. The owner, Sophie, is great and we met other wonderful travellers during our stay who provided great insight into travelling the area.

She was closed for a while after the revolution - but is open again and needs visitors! Hands down the best campsite in Douz - if not in Tunisia. We'll post pics in the near future.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
