It will be very hard, if not impossible for you to buy a second hand car in Morocco. Firstly you are not resident in Morocco and you will have huge problems with the papers, especialy the ownership papers. Secondly, crossing boarders, especialy Mauritania will pose you big problems. I also doubt that you will get a good price, believe it or not cars in Morocoo are not cheap! Much better to buy an older vehcile (Peugeot,Toyota,Series Land Rover) in Europe and then drive it down and then sell it in Mauritania.

Cheers,

Andy

I remember a conversation I had in Morrocco with a local mechanic who was amazed at my response when he asked me how much my Citroen had cost (£1000). He said a similar car in Morrocco would be much more expensive. It would be cheaper and easier, I would imagine, to buy a car in Spain and get the ferry across. (The ferry is very cheap and takes about 30 minutes from Algericas from memory.)

A safe bet is to buy a Series 3, long wheel based diesel for around 1000-1500 pounds, check all potential and danger spots on the vehicle and off you go. Slow as an overweight pig but excellent in North Africa, loads of Series Landies in Morocco. You will get a very high resale value in Mauritania. I was hounded for days to sell my Series 3, 1982 SWB, petrol but in excellent condition and expedition prepared in Mauritania. We had to move camp site to avoid buyers. I was even offered 4000 UK pounds for the Landie.

Cheers,
Andy

Last year I met in Dakhla 2 Ukrainians who managed to buy Samurai in Casablanca, but they didnt new they will not be allowed into Mauritania with the vehicle. I really dont know, what was the problem, but they were turned back, and returned to Dakhla, and tried to sell the Samurai there, and tried to get lift to Mauri.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
