Budapest-Bamako over. GPS coordinates will be made public.

The Budapest-Bamako 2005 was a great success. With the exception of 2 participants everyone made it to Bamako on time. Some cars got totaled, but the drivers still made it. Everyone agreed that they had the time of their lives.

I'd like to thank everyone on this forum who helped us organize this event. You can see the first pictures from the race on our website:

In a few days we'll make the 2005 Budapest-Bamako itinerary public. It contains a lot of useful information and GPS coordinates on the Morocco, Mauritania, Mali route inclduing, hotels, supermarkets, bordercrossings, waypoints, checkpoints, road conditions etc.

beautiful shots! congrats! it would be better to write a text under the photos;
i've got some questions for you;
- how much did you pay for the car at the entrance to mauritania?
- how much was the insurance?
- how much is visa to mauri and mali(how many photos are required)?
thanks for all!

Really good stuff. Really good!!!! April is the latest time to enter, right?

budapestbamako 17 Jan 2006 22:55

-We didn't have to pay anything to enter Mauritania "petit cadeau" (small gifts) were given to the border guards, but officially nothing.

-Insurance was around 30-50Euros. I don't remember exactly. An insurance agent came to the camping and took care of the insurance for everyone.

-Visas were $40 for Mauri, $35 for Mali. 2 photos for each.

-You can enter for next year's event anytime during the year. First come first served. 100 vehicles will be the limit this year.

Hi Andrew!

Have you managed to cross Kiffa-Kayes and Kayes-Mahina-Kita-Bamako with all your vehicles? If so, congratulations !!!

In our two LR Discovery we've crossed each other in West Sahara near Laayoune on 2nd & in Sahara desert in Mauritanien on 1st (?) January, I guess. I have seen several Budapest-Bamako labelled cars including small Trabant!

Waiting for your final travelog.

Best regards

Danek

Only the 4WD and a Mercedes 19O made it through the Kiffa-Kayes road, which is brutal. A lot of the small cars started out on the Kiffa-Kayes route. An Opel Corsa got totalled.

The Trabant made it all the way to Bamako on the better road. It got sold in Bamako for 500Euros at the end.

Here are the new owners. How far did you get?

hajle 19 Jan 2006 22:29

congrats!!
what was the better way that trabant has made it real ??? was that the road - ayoun al etrous, thru kobeni and nioro? or maybe the piste nema - nara ???
it will be really helpful:>
how did you find a trabant's buyer in bamako??:>

budapestbamako 24 Jan 2006 17:14

The route was Nema to Nioro to Bamako (I beleive).
At the end of the race the entire hotel parking lot turned into a used car market. Four or five dealers showed up ad started biddig for the cars.

A Lada 1500 also got sold and a couple of Toyotas.
