Bike situation in Morrocco

HI! am planning on going on a small trip around morroco this summer and am basically looking for the cheapest, crappest bike I can find - as long as it runs I don't care! Does anyone know any garages or anything selling second hand bikes anywhere in morrocco? Are motorbike shops everywhere in morrocco or is it usually difficult to find one there? Any help would be very much appreciated, cheers, jasper

If you're talking about motorbikes, all you will find is mopeds, as crappy as you like. For most people, like anywhere, mopeds are short-range runabouts rather than touring machines. It might sound like a fun way to get around but I dare say buying one and registering it may be a headache for a foreigner. You might try and rent one informally.

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply. I see what you mean about it being a big hassle to buy. Do you have any idea about the cost of renting in Morocco? Clearly it depends on what bike, I do want to venture out to the Atlas mountains so I'll probably need something a bit bigger than a moped. Do you know any where in Morocco that rents out bikes? Cheers, Jasper

p.s. What do you mean by renting informally?

I don't think anyone rents big bikes like they do cars - its too risky or will be very expensive. It's been asked before here.

Informally: go up to a bloke on a moped and say "Salut, how much for your wheels for a fortnight." I bet it will work. If not him then he will know someone.
But long-ranging on a moped will be dire. Buy a 125 hack in Spain if you must.

There is definitely at least one firm doing trail/enduro trips in Morocco, although I imagine you're stuck in an organised (= expensive?) group. Just done a quick Google, but can't find them at the moment. I think they may be UK based, possibly using XR400's?

Not much chance of hiring anything otherwise.

Just found these two - don't think it will "suit you sir" if you're looking for cheap though!

Neither is the one I was thinking of though.

You're probably thinking of Wilderness Wheels or Moto Adventures, they are expensive fly-in tours.

Hi. Thanks a lot for the information, I think I might go for Chris' idea of renting informally - sounds like a lot of fun. I really enjoy being able to make my own decisions on what I do each day so I've never been all that attracted to tours although I do understand that I could get a lot more out of a country by joining one and probably make the trip a lot easier. Thanks again for the help,
Jasper

Geoff- I've left my xt500 with a friend in Niarobi, hope to go and pick it up and do another africa trip as soon as I finish university - miss it a lot!

There is an english guy who has a shop on the main road through Quazazate as you enter it from Skoura that rents out trail bikes. I saw the shop but did not go in. The manager of the Kasbah Ben Moro in Skoura was telling our group about this guy (Both the owner and manager of this kasbah are into bikes it seems). You could try calling up the Kasbah and asking the manager there (Sorry i can't remember his name). A google search came up with this contact info:
Kasbah Aït Ben Moro
2 km avant Skoura
Tel : 212 44 85 21 16
e-mail : hotelbenmoro@yahoo.fr

Thre manager spoke good english BTW
