Best way to get to Sakiet sidi Youssef border post from Hammamet (Tunisia)

Hi there,

Greetings!

I have booked my flights and hotel in Hammamet, Tunisia and is very excited about it! Anyone going there in the end of the year? I will be there from Dec 20 to Jan 7.

On Dec 22, I need to go to Sakiet sidi Youssef border post to meet (pick-up) my friend who is crossing the border from Algeria. What would be the best way to get to Sakiet sidi Youssef border post from Hammamet?

By bus? By train? By Taxi? Or should I rent a car and drive there myself? Oh and is an US drivers's licence (Texas) sufficient enough to rent car and drive in Tunisia?

Any info / suggestions are much appreciated!

Thanks a lot,
Sylvia

As it happens years ago we went to El Kef from Tunis (via Dougga ruins) and El Kef is just 40km from your border post. I recall we used a combination of buses and 'shared taxis' (station wagons / mini buses). It was inexpensive and could be done in a day, even if you start from Hammamet as buses to El Kef are frequent.

From a resort like Hammamet I imagine you may be able to rent yourself a car, although I've never done that. The driving standards in rural Tunisia are not so bad but if you've not done it before it would be initially stressful.
