Availability diesel in Mauritania/W. Sahara

For I heard that diesel is a lot cheaper in Mauritania and Western Sahara than it is in Senegal, I wonder if it is indeed also available (e.g. on the road from Senegal to Nouakchott?).

Thanks for your advice.

Please correct me someone if I missed a few stations but from the memory of my recent drive down through Mauritania a few weeks ago I saw a fuel stop just outside Nouackchott (on the road south), then two stations in Tiguent. We then turned off the road heading for Diama so can not say if there is another station in Rosso. There were no more stations on the Diama road until we crossed over into Senegal.

I never filled up in Senegal, but in Gambia the current price is 48 dilasi a liter.

Plenty of stations in Nouachott and Nouadhbou, can't recall the the exact price but about OUG 390/litre on diesel (gasoil).

Senegal was CFA 870/litre diesel (gasoil).

I'll find out tomorrow morning for Morocco when I fuel up in Dahkla.

Thanks a lot. Does anyone have any further information regarding diesel availability in the south of Western Sahara?

There is a fuel station on the Maroc side of the border, twenty meters past the gate on the right as you travel north.

There are another two stations at Motel Barbas, 80km ish from the border.

Chris Scott's Morocco Overland has more stations listed (further north), would you like me to dig out the book and copy them over?

Tim Cullis 22 Feb 2013 15:11

Obviously never heard of copyright (and I wrote that section of the book).

Hi,

There are some old&new treads in HUBB with the locations or waypoints of mentioned fuel stations - search and you'll find.

I did record them myself in 2011 so if it helps please PM me and I'll gladly send them.

BR,
Luis Cabrita

Thats copy (!) Not copy-paste

If I have to provide info I might as well reference the source eh?

(Did not realise that was your contribution though!)

Thanks to you all. No copyright infringes - or non-copyright infringes - are required as far as I am concerned. I passed W-S last days and liked it. Enough fuel stations around the larger towns (not sure about petrol), although the fuel station in W-S at the border with Morocco was closed (so if you want to fill up before entering Morocco, do it beforehand).

Aliprovidor 28 Feb 2013 16:11

Surely you mean before leaving Morocco.

That's not what I mean. If you come from W-S and want to fill up your tank(s) with cheap(er diesel than in Morocco), it would be advisable to do it way before entering Morocco.

moggy 1968 2 Mar 2013 19:15

Through Mauri and WS I filled up whenever I got to about half a tank at the next station, you cannot guarantee that the stations will have fuel so to try and run it tight to save a few quid really isn't worth the risk. Fill up when you can!

No problem with diesel. In Mauritania is difficult to find essence, but not diesel.

moggy 1968 2 Mar 2013 22:11

when we were there virtually all stations in Nouakchott where empty of all fuel types, just because there is fuel when one person visits don't asume there will be when you go.
Don't cut it fine, there's no need

In our specific case, we were a convoy of 35 vehicles and we all filled up on a daily basis without any problem. As said, we hadn't problems but if some other travellers, as said here, have had, make sure to get some recent info , 'cos it may be due to a temporay shortage problem. We, on January 2013, had no issues with diesel, and only Total had essence.
