Aswan to Wadi Halfa BY ROAD? [moved from HU Bar]

My brother and I are stuck in Aswan in Egypt trying to use the road to Wadi Halfa in Sudan. It is open and has been used by convoys of overlanders in the past. Does anyone know the contact details of any overlands who have done it. We need permission from the military but are not sure which part or who gives permission. Any help welcome!!

See Recent Post...Somewhere

Alledgedly Karim Siag can organise this. His username was karimsiag I think.

He posted on one of the many FERRY threads. I cann't find it now, but it's there somewhere in the last week or two.

It'll be very interesting to find out the details.

I think the road is still officially closed - certainly to foreigners anyway. The only report I'm aware of tourists using the road was Wadi Halfa to Aswan some months back and they paid a lot (1000 euro from memory). But this was all hearsay.

As Jamie T said an Egyptian travel agency recently said they could organise it but I suspect it will be for big bucks, if it is possible. This is the website link they gave.

If you find out more info please post it - a lot of people would be interested.

Why are you stuck??? Is the boat not going at all - or just with some days delay? What exactly is the problem? And why do you post this in the HU bar instead of the Sahara Forum?

Greetings,
Achim

Go by ferry.... It's one of the highlights on an Africa trip.

It's a headache at the time, but it's worth it.. Trust me !

Aswan

This won't help you at all but....... Go and chill out down the "Aswan Moon" (Floating restaurant) and get a Falooka ride down the Nile. Ask for Ashran and Bestouwy the Falooka captains. I worked at the Aswan High Dam back in 2002, great part of the world to be stuck in...!! Good luck..!!

Hey guys,

I see so many of those threads passing by, that I lost track of all off those. Why not using the ferry like Touring Ted said, its part of the adventure. Maybe not the most easiest way for some of us, but are we really in a hurry? Life is to enjoy. We are away from home to experience it intensely. Africa is still Africa and it isn't suppose to be easy otherwise there is no Africa anymore.

Life with the locals and stay with the locals.

Cheers Richard

@ Richard, Ted,

You are perfectly right: If I have the choice I will certainly opt for the ferry, being one of the last adventures on the Eastern route.

The problem: One did not have the choice for much of 2012, with the ferry - and, more importantly, the barge - running so erraticly, sometimes not at all for weeks, sometimes with motorists being forced to rent an "exclusive" barge for a horrendous fee.

Now let's cross fingers that the ferry and barge will run "normally" and regularly again in the coming months.

Greetings,
Achim
