Who recently (2003/2004) crossed Algeria by car? Was it safe, did you need a guide and how much did it cost? Whe wan't to go in via Niger and go out via Tunesia or in the other way.

We have yet to do the trip from Tunisia to Tam, which is kind of the reverse way you are proposing, but have within the last couple of weeks found out the following:

Due to recent deteriation of security issues in Algeria, (kidnappings, possible Al'Quieda camps, etc), the Algerian Government have recently insisted that all travellers in vehicles need to arrange for a guide to pick them up at the border crossing. The guide will have to have his own vehicle and he will cost you 130 to 150 euros per day. This cost is not so great if a group of you are going, and can split the cost!
