Alcohol in Mauretania

Is it illegal to bring alcohol into Mauretania? Just a bottle of vodka for personal celebration. :thumbup1:

Yes,I believe so, when I last crossed the border the police / customs were checking & asking if we had any alcohol (we did have a few beers, well hidden & they didnt find them during a quick search).
But in one of the offices / sheds there was a big pile of the stuff which I assumed they had confiscated, probably to sell on!!

At some checkpoints in the country we were asked if we had any, supposedly as the (friendly) official wanted a drink, but this may have just been a ruse.

Let me put it this way, the first city you reach after crossing the border (Nouadhibou) has a couple of nice local bars where you can get your thirst satisfied (beer, vodka, Barcardi, you name it).

I did not think I would be able to get a beer after a long time on the bike, but again I was wrong.

No, alcohol is not legal in Mauritania...

Cheers

Last time I had a bottle of vodka with me when I crossed the border but I'm just curios if I have to hide it. Last time they didn't find it but you never know...

When I've bought alcohol in Maur I got the impression that it was illegal.

Having asked a number of Frenchies who've lived in Mauri for a while, and the guide we have used for years to take us through the bird park and along the beach, the line seems to be that it is illegal to have booze in the country, but that it is generally tolerated as far as foreigners/tourists are concerned.

We took alcohol in last January. Had it openly on display. We were just asked not to drink it Mauritania. Yeah, right! Guards not bothered, nor did they ask for any.
