Air rifles

At home I like to do some target shooting with my Gamo air rifle. I have been advised, rather strongly, to leave the rifle at home when we start our trip through Africa. Any comment?

Not a wise idea,
even a plastic BB gun would invite trouble.

Simon Mann just emailed me the following about taking an air rifles on an overland trip.

"Jesus man! dont send me emails here! the jail wardens might suspect something. What you really need are 3 trunks of Kalishnikovs marked ' Jacuzzi Parts for Mark Thatcher' and 6 bags of rough diamonds. these will get you into the right places.and buy the right people. avoid the dodgey englishman though...

Oh come on guys, Vrolijk just wants to play, not trade in arms like those Mark Thatcher types. Where is your spirit of adventure? Just imagine going on an elephant hunt with a pop gun - you can have all the thrill without doing any harm. That is, if you can run fast enough ...

Hi Vrolijk,

Although I would definatly advise against bringing an air rifle due to sometimes paranoid local officials, the funny thing is that you can quite easily buy an AK-47 in various north african countrys for between US$ 60-90 if you ask around! We were constantly asked if we had any weapons with us at border crossings, which we didn't, yet could practically drive only 5 minutes into the country and buy a battle rifle. Africa can be weird sometimes!

OK people.
From the funny, disbelieving, sarcastic, sardonic and "you got to be kidding" kind of answers I have read, I feel justified in thinking that maybe I should leave my Kalashgamo at home. Thanks for the input. I now do know where - and who - Simon Mann is, the poor chap. Let's hope he can talk himself out of trouble as shooting is not a good option this time.
Cheers.
