Accommodation recommendation in Cairo?

Any cheap hotels or hostels or backpackers you guys can recommend in Cairo? we need a place to stay before we get our bikes back from the embassy.

When?

How many are you?
When are you coming?
and
What the hell are your bikes doing in the embassy?

Ok,..I'll go and read your website soon, ie when I've got the oil of my hands from replacing the damn stator nuts that decided to come loose in the middle of the desert and smash my engine cover from the inside.

Dahab hotel down town near Tahir used to get recommended but that's a long time ago and I've no personal knowledge

JamieT, it's only my wife and myself. We land in Cairo the morning of the 16th, then need to get a place to stay and head off to the SA embassy to get our bikes.

We had a small off in Sudan and my wife hurt her knee. 4 weeks later in Hurghada the doctors told her they need to operate immediately as it is serious and also want a 800usd deposit for the trouble. We did not want to call their bluff and decided to rather fly back to South Africa for treatment, which cost us a fraction of that.

In all the commotion the SA embassy were nice enough to allow us to store our bikes there.
I hope they are still in working order, you know when stuff stand they just break by themselves.

Also our bikes are over their time in Egypt so I also need to get to customs to find out what I need to do about that small issue. :smiliex:

hoi bikers
how are you ?
try to sort your carnet by give a visit to the Automobile club down town perhaps they can help you ,
ATCE-EGYPT
or you may need to go to the closest customs department which will be Cairo Air port good luck with Egypt Routine ,
about a place to stay i always stay in Zamalek area ,in a hotel called new president
Booking.com: New President Hotel Zamalek, Cairo, Egypt - 14 Guest reviews. Book your hotel now!
they can sort your bike in front of the entrance of the hotel in front of 24 hours security and yes its safe there
the good point of the hotel is its close to where ever you want to go ,(not the South African Embassy though )
bad point a bit noisy at night cause of the bar down stairs but its very OK to me ,
if you will come to Alexandria i have a place for you

Campsite in Cairo: near the Pyramids

100 LE per night p.p., but we managed to talk that down to 250 for the 4 of us... ;-)

Really nice, for 200LE they arrange a long camel ride to the pyramids (you'll need to pay another 60 for entrance to the park or 30LE if you have a nice student card) with taxi-pickup from the campsite and a good breakfast.
Say hi to Helal and Sue from us!

that is the same one as in my post.
The 100LE p.p. is overpriced (if you compare it to hotels etc.), but like I've posted: we managed to talk that down a lot!

For sure it is very nice!

Isis garden camp

The proprietors of Isis Garden Camp were very friendly and helpful and there is good security. You park in the drive way and there is a nice garden and pool however it is very expensive at 300 Egyptian pounds per night for two people. This is just to camp there. Also the in house organised tours were expensive. It is close to the great pyramid of Giza but far from the city.
