2 weel drive in Mauretanien

I am planing a trip to Senegal and was woundering if there is any inland road trough Mauretanien from W. Sahara to Nouakchott that I can use with a 2 weel van close to the see.

I was a member of a 7-car convoy on the Atlantic route. I was the only motorcycle, and there were 6 cars with rear-wheel drive, and one Land Rover. The Land Rover was the one who got stuck most often. Secret: Go with a guide who knows the route, and who will pick the easiest sections. It's worth the money.
You'll make it and will have fun doing it.

Cost depends on the number of cars (bikes) in the convoy. I paid in the neighbourhood of US$20 for the two-day trip. But this was in 2000. Best to shop around. Go camp at one of the local campgrounds in Nouadhibou, and the guides will find you. Haggle! This is Africa.

The going rate for a guide in Jan 2004 was 200 euro for a max of 5 cars.

Another thought: In 2000 the name of our guide was "Fadel". I can recommend him warmly. Ask around, perhaps he's still in business.

There isnt a road as su8ch, it is under construction. >The old route has benn done a loads of times with vans so it isnt a problem although rear wheel drive helps a lot. What van do you have in mind. It is also possible to drive on or alongside the new road. I will be going down at the end of the month so I will post an update here in a few weeks - inschallah.

Thanks again for all info. Iám planing to drive in a Mercedes 310 or Ford Transit. It would be great if you would like to e-mail me with some up to date info when you go there.

If you have a choice then take the mercedes, spare parts are easier to come by and it will be much easier to sell wherever you go. Try to get 215R14 tyres if not then at least 205R14. You will have a lot more leeway for letting air down. The link above doesnt work but if you try "mauritania peugeot-504 jan sweden" on google.com its the thied orr fourth link.
