Where to go in the Alps?
 

Doing a house swap for two weeks in Florence in August and looking for advice on routes through the Alps. Getting the ferry to Zebrugge and will have 4 or 5 days to get to there and the same to get back. Planning on camping and looking to stay on well tarmaced roads unless looking to pitch camp (I'm on an R1!) Thought I'd head for Austria on the way down (heard the Grossglockner roads good) and Switzerland on the way back. Anyone got any tips? Also, have heard that there can be serious rain in August- are some areas more/less prone than others? Thanks in advance.:thumbup1:

Personally I rate switzerland because the road are good, toll free (execept motorways) and above all really good.

Furkapass etc are really good roads, can get a little busy with camper's in high summer though.

I have also heard the swiss police can be very heavy handed, personally I didn't experence it in 3 trips but I think that might be more luck that judgment. If you crusing then no worries.

The weather can be unpredictable pretty much anytime in the Alps but it does'nt usually keep raining for days on end...if you get a wet day it ususally is dry for the next few.Snow is not unusual on some of the higher passes even in August.Local knowlage gleaned from cafes and bars can help here.
Grossglockner is well known but they charge you for the privelage of riding it and anyway in my own opinion is not the most spectacular or most beautiful of passes.The Stelvio beats it for my money as there are 3 aproaches to choose from,and there are others that are unsurfaced that are higher and have better scenery but obviously are not R1 material!
Regarding the local fuzz...i've been stopped every time i've ridden through the alps,only ever in Switzerland, and only ever to have the E marking checked on my silencer! Which gets fun when they are told the E marking is facing the right hand ally case and is not visible without taking said case off...i've never had to take it off yet.:mchappy:
