I am hoping my budget wont be too tight, i plan too cook as might is questionable (effort, nutrition ,price, taste vs effort, nutrition, price, taste....cook vs buy).
I would love any tips on keeping the price down.
I am hoping to get a 400-650 size bike in Santiago, however this is subject to time, price, reliability. The fact is that if my cash is getting low i will have the option to sleep were i can.
I don't expect to get as much from the trip culturally than if i had more time.
But a year fits for me and i have some flexibly speed, and route.
I am planning ushuaia late oct, pantanal dec, lima mid feb, french guiana apr, panama mid juneish, a little faster of slower and i should make its up north for summer. I have found it hard to get the type of weather info i need, different places with different info.
Your info is always helpful, I have been checking up on the hubb and even got a couple of their dvds, the information i have gotten and even more so the advice has really helped so far..

My main reason for wanting to come from equador is because i would love to see a few parts of equador. I will have a look into shipping from equador to panama, but i think it will be $$. i think (not ever doing it) that i could handle the time on the boat, i have spent some time at sea. I have a feeling i will have to adjust my route on the road, should i get low on time, money, or fun. I would love to follow my route, but at the end of the day adaptability is paramount. I will have to adapt to sleeping in a hammock.

I have noticed that when I look through here or other moto touring sites like ADVRider.com, people will post all kinds of details - photos, maps, stories, etc - except money. You'll see occasional comments about the cost of a hotel room, a meal, or getting a spare part, but generally posters don't seem to be all that forthright with comments about budgeting.

When it comes to budgeting Latin America, I only know Mexico and Costa Rica. Both are more expensive than most other LA countries. In Mexico you might spend anywhere from $5 US/night for a hammock on a beach to $50/night for a swanky room in a city centre. Generally I found that you could get something respectable for the middle of that range. Of course, this can vary a lot by what someone calls 'respectable'!

Costa Rica is more expensive than Mexico, and I found that unless you are well off the beaten track you will be paying American-style prices.

I think if you are willing to camp in a bedroll or sleep in hostel-type places, and eat street food, local bakery, etc, you can live pretty cheaply in most parts of Latin America.

I hope others will chime in with their estimates as to housing/food budgets....

It sounds like most people are claiming US$75/day on average, not including flights or the motorcycle itself (shipping, buying, renting, etc.) but that does cover food, shelter, fuel, repairs, park fees, etc.
