Weather Overview

Hi community,

findint the right time to be on the right place is quite confusing when you want to see the whole world.

I want to start in Vienna and go all arount the world (Asia, Australia, ferry to south america, north america and then a ferry to south africa and back home to Vienna / Austria.

1) I have a brand new R1200GS Adventure but it might be cheaper and more clever to buy an old R100GS with large tank and start with this (no can-bus system, more repairs possible in case of breakdown, lower insurance and cheaper carnet). Do you think it is a good idea to go with an older bike or can I do it with the new one - and how much more it will costs (insurance, carnet, etc.).

2) Does anyone have a worldmap overview, where I can see the best months for visiting this countries by motorbike. I am planning to take time out for about two years and am just starting to plan my route.

3) My primary target is making good pictures and seeing great landscapes and people, so the route should be "spectacular" for photography - anyone had the same problem and planned some route like this before?

Thank you for any inputs,
Best Regards,
Vilijam

Take old bike!

I just sold my 2003 R1150GS Adventure so that I could ride my old R100GS around the world next year. You mention the exact reasons why I made the decision I did. I'm in the process of going through the bike this winter to prepare it for the journey where the Adventure would have been simply jumping on and hitting the starter button!

You might find that Lonely Planet books are a good resource for weather information. They'll say when the wet season is and all the other good stuff such as festivals not to miss. For weather I sometimes pop onto www.wunderground.com to see what the weather is currently in a certain location. For example, on this day next year we should be somewhere near Lima, Peru where it is currently 22C and partly cloudy while in Calgary it is -2C and overcast.
