Vancouver to argentina!

I just passed my motorcyle test a week ago, it was so much fun. The reason i wanted a liscene is because i love to travel and i figure a motorcycle would be great way to travel!!!

I plan to go to vancouver and head south as far to the soutehrn tip of argentina, i am just in the process of planning my trip.

I figure i would be best to purchase i bike in canada.... i willl need all the paperwork to pass through borders yeah ? i wanted to buy the bike in canada to save money on shipping costs from the uk, i plan to cut alot of costs my camping alot and generally roughing it!! although in citys and stuff i would pay for hostels.

So big question.... whats the typical millage of a touring bike and what kind of bike would you recommend for the trip i plan to undertake? i will just get a rough cost of everything! any help of info is greatly appreciated!!!

Dont worry too much on the mileage of the bike, anything under20,000 should be fine. Its more important to check the condition of the bike as a whole rather than just go by the clock.

You want something that has been cared for and requires nothing more than consumables to run nicely.

As you have just passed your test dont go out looking for too bif a machine. You'llbe on your own i guess for some of the time so whatever you choose has to be in your ability to pick up off the floor in case of any topples.

For where your planning on going your best bet would be a mid capacity 400-650 single cyclinder dual sport. Frugal on fuel, reliable and capable of good crusing speeds they can take a knock and dont stand out like gs's and bigger tourers.

But get some practice in on any bike first:clap:

I agree with what Graham says.. Mileage really isn't a big deal. I'd rather have a bike with more miles than a bike thats been sitting for the past 5 years.

craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums is the place to buy bikes used in the US. My understanding is it is cheaper to buy here than in Canada. Buy a bike in Seatte.. starting your trip there. An option is to develop some relationships online on either here or Advrider.com and get someone to check out the bike for you before your trip starts so you can start your bike paperwork ahead of time.

I'd go with a 650cc moto unless you change sprockets/seats on smaller bikes. There are alot of miles to cross in the US, Canada, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina where having a bike that will cruise fast will be advantageous.

Expenses: I have no idea on what the US/Canada would cost, but my 7 month Texas to Argentina trip, I spent about $12,000 USD. You could easily spend alot more if you stayed at nice hotels, but to spend much less, you'd really have to cut back. That price includes crossing the Darien Gap for the bike and I, but not back to the US.
