USA - Costa Rica? How long - how much???

Hi guys!

My plan is to ride from Texas/California to Costa Rica. What do you think how much time I should spent there and how much money do I need???
Basic travel!!! Tent and food on the street! Perhaps sometimes a hostal....

I want to meet the locals - and of course other travellers on the road !!!

Hi , I am getting ready to leave in July for Central America, after many search I will say your budget should be about $60 to $70 including lodging , but I will not camp so I can't help you with that. what kind of bike you ride you let you know more about where you will be riding <Cancun VS Cooper Canyon or maybe both>
do some search on this site , it's loaded with very good up to date info.

Costa rica

I spent 3 months riding from Colorado to Costa Rica (in 2005). With regards to "how long," I'd say 3 months is "good." I spent 2 months in Mexico alone- and could have spent 2 years, I just love the place. As far as costs: if you're willing to camp alot and eat on the street as you said, $25 per day will be no problem- and this includes fuel. You mentioned meeting locals, locals in many parts of Mexico would consider $25 per day a great sum of money. If you're willing to get dirty and tough it out, $15 per day, including fuel, will do the job. Don't forget, when things are going fine and you're actually coming in under budget (thanks to friendly locals who put you up and threaten your life- when you offer them money!) your bike might suddenly decide it needs some heavy maintenence. Ahh, life on the road...enjoy the ride!

I canĀ“t wait....

Hi, I could leave tomorrow, but it is still only an idea..... I think I will ride on an old F 650 BMW. I think the bike should be okay for this trip- what do you think??? Thanks for your answers - Hope to see you one day on the road!

There's a fellow named Ron Grant who, several years back, rode from Florida to Costa Rica on an old Yamaha SR250 'Exciter'. He said the only time he felt the bike was "too small" was in the United States; once he got into Mexico the bike was plenty fast for the roads. You can find his trip journal with some pictures floating around on the WWW somewhere.

He only spent a week or so in Mexico, but I think he took two or three months to visit through all the various Central American countries except Panama. At the end of the trip he sold the SR250 in CR for more than he paid for it in Florida!

TX - Costa Rica

Went once (to Panama) in 3 months and $4000, return took 10 days and $800. So it becomes what you want to make of it. Hostels are a great way to travel cheap - they average less then $10/night and you can always find a safe place for the bike. Sometimes that even includes food. Just e-mail if you want more beta!
