Hi, It is not possible to ride from Russia through georia to Turkey at the moment. During the summer we had to take the ferry from Sochi to Trazbon which is an overnight sailing. Andy

As Andy says, the border between Georgia and Russia is closed to all. Although this could change.

Nor can you go south, round Georgia, through Azerbaijan - unless you are a CIS (Commonwealth of Independant Soviet states - now SOME former states only) Passpoprt holder.

The options between Russian Federation and Turkey are ferry across the Black Sea - or by road through Ukraine, Moldovia, Romania and Bulgaria.

Thanks for your helpful replies. I like to make circular trips and not go and return on the same routes. I would like to visit Kursk and Volgograd and was looking at route options.

Your other option is a very long, round trip from Volgograd, through Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran to eastern Turkey possibly via Armenia. All permissable for British, EU, USA, Australian, CIS and most other Citizens, subject to Visas - exept no Israelis allowed into Iran at present.

Volgograd is very moving ... but the best time to visit is winter, when you feel what they felt. Its a bit to 'cheery' and green in summer for my liking. For best effect, read Beevor's book just prior to arriving.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
