UK to Greece & back again

Hi,

Rediscovered my TDM850 this afternoon & the insane urge to ride thousands of miles is back again. Last time this happened I rode to Spain.

I'm considering visiting some friends in Athens. Any advice on places to visit, routes, maps & campsite guides would be very welcome.

how much time have you got? I'd go through France to take the boat to Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Stromboli, toe of Italy, boat to Greece. the roads are fabulous and I guess you weren't thinking of off-roading it! Crete is amazing (er ... was in '87 and TBM said it still was last year), but I've never done "mainland" Greece. from what I hear, former Yugoslavia is going to be nervy on a bike that might be tempting to thieves -so no worries there ;-). have fun and allow loads of time for a mediterranean adventure.

A few years ago I went to Greece via Czech Republic, good cheep beer but a bit dull, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Excellent, Good campsite near Risov near Brasov, very interseting towns. Romania in the mountains is a good place to visit but the roads tend to turn into dirt every now and then, no problem on a Guzzi California so I would think that a TDM would be fine. Its only 4 days from Mount Olympos to Southampton but worth going over the St Bernards pass as the veiws are stunning, Aoosta at the Italian side is worth a look. Chris

Yippee, looks like its going to happen this summer !!

I think I'll go France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, boat to southern Italy, Sicily, & back through Italy & France.

I'm a bit concerned about HU, RO, BG but not sure why ? How safe are these countries for a solitary biker ?

Crash Dummy, I lived in Budapest (HU), some time ago and travelled around the country, not on bike though. I don't think you need to worry about HU. The country side is beautiful and the people lovely. I didn't have the change to visit Romania, but from what I have heard it is much poorer then HU.

On our way down to Romania you might want to stop in Gyor (NW-HU). Nice and relaxed town. If you want to swim with the locals stop at Lake Velence. They go there instead of Lake Balaton, since Germans tend to rule there in the summer time. The area around Vac and Visegrad (north of Budapest) is extremly romantic and definately worth the visit.

I'm myself going to travel through HU, RO, BG and GR next year so I engourage travellers to give us good tips about these countries.

Crash Dummy, have save travel and let us know what your experienced when you return home.

Hi, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria are perfectly safe, the only problem I have ever had in any of those countries,( been through them twice and I'm going back again this summer enroute to South Africa) is haveing to pay an on the spot speeding fine $10 USD in Hungary, got a recipt and all, and done for 50mph in a 50kmh speed zone in Bulgaria, I played very dumb, (not difficult for me)and they soon got bored of me and sent me on my way. The difference between the Hungarian and Bulagrian cops, the Hungarians spoke English and made it plain what their radar said. It was a fair cop gov. Have fun, and steer away from main roads as these will have all the diesel fume spewing trucks on them. Chris

Hungary is supposedly very good, based on information obtained from my Hungarian and Austrian co-workers. Apparently no security problems there at all, pretty much the same standard as the rest of middle Europe.

Romaina is, in principle, not a problem spot, but you need to be careful around big urban areas. There is a lot of serious poverty there, and when people have empty bellies, they can cometimes do impolite things.

Bulgaria, I have been told (by Bulgarians and many others) is pretty risky. You would need to take some considerable security precautions there.

Me, I'm going to ride through Hungary and Romania this summer, but I'll pass on Bulgaria. One holdup at gunpoint can ruin your whole day.

I did it !! 4427 miles in 2 weeks, the most fun I've had with my clothes on in years.

I'll put some pages up once my piccies get developed.
