UK to Egypt - is shipping 4x4 viable?

Hi All,

We are 2 South African guys doing the eastern route from Egypt down to South Africa latest mid-December, allowing 5 months (+ 1 in reserve). We chose the eastern route due to compressed planning timeframes (approx 3 months), with the western route perceived as being longer and more difficult/more planning + preparation required - which does not fit our timescales.

As such, we need to get to Egypt & considered the following options:
  • Ferry from Marseille to Tunisia, drive through Libya.
  • Drive around the Med.
  • Ship the car from UK to Egypt.
Driving around the Med was ruled out due to time and cost constraints. Would love to do Libya, but we require a degree of flexibility around our departure date that, coupled with the cost and difficulty in obtaining this visa has forced us to explore the 3rd option - shipping the fully kitted vehicle to Egypt.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Major concerns (in descending order) are cost, vehicle security, shipping timeframes, and clearing Egyptian Customs.

Would be sincerely grateful for any insight you may be able to provide.

Many thanks
Brett

PS: Any glaring flaws in our thought processes?

I'd drive the med, I've done Aquaba to Malaga in 9 days in a truck limited to 90kmh. (Italy -> greece ferry) Check up on the deisel tax for Syria & Jordan, Having travelled through egypt a few times with tourist trucks, get your carnet du passage sorted out before you leave whichever way you go. 800% import tax in Egypt.
