uk coastal trip

hi there folks, just to introduce myself, i'm a family man from dorset u.k. i live with my wife of six and a half years, my two sons aged fifteen and five and my dear ol' mum aged eighty. we recently (1 week ago) were told that my mum has contracted cancer for probably the last time (she's had it four times before!?). this is to be confirmed tommorrow (tuesday 09/03/2010). if it's bad news i'm thinking that i'd like to do a coastal ride around the UK to raise awareness and money for cancer research, macmillan nurses and marie curie nurses, who give their time and care free! my main question would be who knows the complete distance starting from poole, dorset and finishing back where i started. no motorways and only the occaisional dual carriageway. any other interesting thoughts or ideas or indeed any suggestions (as this is going to be my first charity ride) would be very welcome...
regards spiff.

Well, 'Bike' magazine did a run round the coast in the July 2009 issue and they covered 3152 miles (in 72 hours using several riders) They took a few shortcuts, but it's a ball park figure anyway.

Perhaps the relevant cancer care organisations can advise on sponsorship. Good luck anyhow.

hey spiff sorry to here that about your mum.

if you wanted to be really precise and had some spare time you could use googlemaps. Make your own map, then use the 'draw a line along a road' function.

If you need help let me know as im a geek with these things.

Good luck

Hi spiff sorry about your mum, Nick Sanders did a trip like this last year and wrote about it in Bike magazine, I remember somewhere that he said to alow a fortnight to do it comfortably but if you didn't want to stop and sightsee then you could do it a lot faster than that.

unfortunately the time has come to plan for the ride as my mum sadly passed away last month. the trip will start on the 25th May 2011,(my mums birthdate). it will take approximately two weeks, some 5000 miles on my Triumph Daytona 955i (ouch!). I'm hoping to get some radio coverage and also set up a blog with links to the charity web sites, to allow people to donate straight to them. I would also like to use the facilities of the YHA each night so any tips as to who to speak to organize this would be appreciated.

Hi Spiff, sorry to here of your mums passing. Have you thought of a web site for max exposure , linked to the charity of your choice and donations on line.
Im doing somthing similar at the mo. Check out Solo Bike Tour for Cancer with Julians Restaurant, Hoylake . This might help with ideas. Feel free to PM me for anything else . Good luck . Jules.
