TX to Acapulco?

I'm going to meet friends/ family in Acapulco for a wedding. Thought this would be a good opportunity to get my feet wet and ride down.
Any comments/ suggestions/ experiences on the best route to take?

I returned recently from Acapulco. Suggest to avoid Mexico City. Get a good Mexico map called GUIA ROJI. Its a Texico Map. Get at www.guiaroji.com.mx 85 pesos ($8.50us)I entered back into US at Rio Grand City. No problems. Don't miss the road north of Pachuca! Give me an email if you have concerns traveling alone(no problem) or want info on border crossing or travel in general.

Any specific reasons to avoid Mexico City? I'm thinking about renting there and riding down (if I can't rent from TX for Mexico, which doesn't seem possible).

To the first poster--I suggest if you live in the right area of Texas to cross at Eagle Pass/Piedra Negras and travel through Zacatecas, Guatalajara etc.--- You'll like Zacatecas so try to keep a couple of days free to look around--
As to the third poster---I've driven through Mexico City many times but it's worth avoiding if possible--
If you have not been there the traffic is beyond comprehension as is the size of the city--- also there is little danger in Mexico, except for Mexico city--and I'm talking stealing not muggings etc.
Of course, I don't know your plans or needs but Mexico City would not be my choice for just staying a while in Mexico---Zacatecas mentioned above is a delightful city as is Guanajuato--but some of the southern cities like Oaxaca and Tuxila are a lot cheaper---
good luck--
