Trying to get some info on the M51 in Russia

Trying to get some info on the M51 in Russia
Evening everyone not posted before and I'm just trying to get some info for a trip this summer

Has anyone made this crossing it's between Kurgan and Omsk in Russia on the M51, according to the map it goes into Kazhkstan.

So my question is do I need a transit visa or is this a transit route where I can get a temp visa on the ground, it would be good to hear from anyone who's made this crossing before I get myself stuck as I have a rather important meeting to make and don't really want to get stuck for ever at the border while they figure what to do with me.

Thanks in advance

HI,
yes you realy need a visa /tourist or transit/, exception situation when you are in international express train. But here you must be violent, because kazakh customers make troubles and extort bribes.

Thanks for the reply I did think it was going to be a mess, I was planning to go round but it seemed a straighter route just to stay on M51

Also someone said there was really bad roads if I tried to avoid that corssing think I'll just go for them had enough hassle at borders to learnt my lesson.

thanks again

Dont worry its no problem. Ca 4-5 km before kazakh border is crossing where you must turn left (if going west-east). Detour thru rural areas is ca 250 km long. Roads - speed posibility ca 60-70 km/h. It takes you 1 day. With your GS itll be nice trip :-))

8th May i am leaving from Czech Rep. to RTW tour. And the same road is waiting for me too :-))

I've been looking at my russian A-Z roadbook and google earth and think that the route is an option I've also looked at going via katerinburg bit higher up. Not sure yet main thing is to look at all the routes before saying which is the best one.

thanks for your comment. will update once I have it worked out in my head and will leave info on my blog as to how I get on.

regards
