Trip Joburg to London via The Mid East

Hi Guys,
I am planning a trip from Johannesburg to London in a few years time
with my son, both of us on seperate bikes, going up the east coast of Africa, through Sudan, Egypt, then across to the Mid East through
either Isreal or Syria, then up to Turkey, through Europe to the
UK.
Love ready all the advise that is left on this site, and I am sure that it is going to help me no end, however, have one question that I would love some advise on.

Based on the planned route, and that we will not be wanting to stop for more than a max of two nights at any one place, would 3 to 4 months be
enough time to do this trip.

Love to hear from experinced traveller.

Thanks All in Advance.

Stan.

Just did reverse...

Hi Stan,

We just did Munich to Cape Town in 7 months. We had originally planned to do it in a much shorter time but found Africa to be a fantastic place so we ended up staying at some places a lot longer. If you don't do the Serengeti safari or climb Kilimanjaro you could shave off a couple of weeks. We also spent a fair amount of time in Ethiopia that you could knock off another three weeks if you didn't want to visit the Mursi tribes in the south or go up to Lalibela in the north. We probably spent a week or two just waiting for Kenya to stabilise after the elections. So I think you could get it down to 5 months without too much chopping but more than that and you'll probably start to feel rushed. Check out our website for more info!

I have just done JNB to Kenya on a Dakar and a 650GS with my son. Fantastic experience. If I can help any on that part of the plan let me know. I did a ride report for the gs users site. If you have time it is on South Africa to Kenya- bit long -sorry! - ::. UKGS'er.com .::

Hi Stan

We did London to CT in 7 months (221days ) to the day but that was on 250's going 250km/day on average. Reviewing our trip we saw that we were on the bikes 115 days and had 96 rest days.

These guys did it in less than 2 months (3/12/07 - 28/1/08): a

Each to their own!!!

My wife and I took 9 months to drive from Cape Town to Dubai, and one month from Dubai to England. My Carnet is not valid for Egypt, so we took the long road around, and spent a lot of time in the Middle East. I would not spend much time in the southern part of Africa, it gets a lot more interesting once you get to Kenia, Uganda, Etheopia etc.

Enjoy the planning.

Hi Stan,

I'm just back from our Middle East Trip through,Turkey,Syria,Jordan,Israel-ferry to Athens,Greece and back to Bulgaria. So bear in mind,if you choose to enter into Israel you have to go just overseas to Europe, because of Syria. You won't pass through Syria with the Israeli stamp into your passport.I think you have two options:
1.to skip Turkey- get to Jordan(from Egypt or Sudan),Syria then back to Jordan, enter to Israel and then from Haifa to Athens,Greece.
2.to skip Israel- get to Jordan,Syria,Turkey then Bulgaria or Greece depends of you and further up to UK.
If you decide to pass through Bulgaria,my pleasure to meet you up for a beer or for a ride, please just mail me or PM me,even for further detailed POI or trucks in Middle East.

Cheers,

Simon
