No need to buy individual state maps. Buy one of the general road atlases as printed by Rand McNally and others, all states, Canada and a single map of Mexico( little detail that one) If You need it for planning purposes in the UK you will no doubt find them at booksellers. If there is no rush , wait till you are stateside and pop into any of the big departments tores like Wal-Mart and it is yours for under $6 Most magazine racks and truck stops sell them too.. State maps are given out free by most of the states and provinces at their border welcome booths, and you can probably write in and get them by mail.

I just gave away all my free state highway maps - but I've been there, done that.

Most states will give you a free map. They don't necessarily have more detail than the all-in-one road atlas, but they are bigger (for old eyes) and you can fold them up for your tank bag map case.

They may not mail to outside the U.S. though, so if you have a US address you could use, to collect them all for you, that might be easier for the states to deal with. The only ones that don't give out free ones here in the west are the ones popular with tourists that tend to soak the tourists for everything they can get (Arizona and California).

You should be able to google each State Department of Transportation or State Highway Department, and get a specific form to complete for your mailing address (don't bother emailing a state - go to the respondible state agency which you can find online). They almost all mailed me a map within a week or two at most.

As someone mentioned, Wal-Mart has a very good road atlas map book that has all 50 states, state by state, as well as Canada, and Mexico, although the Mexican map is very vague. I think its something like $5 US. As a bonus (or the catch) it lists all the US Wal-marts. The US is very easy to map out, at least by the major highways.
