Maps of South America on Paper!!

Guys, I am looking for the best maps on paper that I can get for central & south America. Sorry to all GPS loving fans but maybee I am old School.

I need to see the bigger picture I guess to plan where I want to go, and no 4 inch screen can do that.

Have heard some good things about IMB in vancouver n Geo Maps. All wordly wise n Old School knowledge is wellcome.

I have bought a few recently for some planning and went for Rough Guide/Reise maps because they are plastic / water proof so might even survive a real trip!

Rough guide maps:

Argentina 1:2,000,000
Chile 1:1,600,000
Peru (has S of Quito too so didn't buy an Ecuador map) 1:500,000

Reise:

Bolivia 1:300,000

How they compare to the others I'm not sure. Have no idea how accurate they are genuinely how durable as I've only just started planning!

way to go man...maps are the way to go...so many people like to see where you've been and it's such a great conversation piece to pull out a map and watch the kids stare in amazement at where you've been...GPS (great piece of shit)!

While I wouldn't go so far as to call GPS garbage, I don't rely on it for the long hauls. I do happily, joyfully, and gratefully use it in strange cities. I can plug in the waypoint for a hotel, campground, or attraction site and just follow the arrow without stopping to ask for directions. Sorry, I know I don't have a lot of experience using it yet, but it was great helping us find a museum whose brochure listed coordinates, for finding our way to a place in Boise, and for getting us connected on the right intersection without worrying about looking for signs. I wouldn't go anywhere without my paper maps though.

I picked up all my maps of S. America at Barnes and Noble...with the exception of Colombia. They couldn't even order a Colombian map??? Prices were cheaper than anything I could get online (shipping versus local sales tax). The maps I liked were made by Borch. Laminated 1:4,000,000 scale. ($12.50 US/map out the door [i.e. including tax])

I think a combination of Maps and GPS is best. I learned my lesson in an earlier trip this year. I was using only GPS and found that many roads ran out on me. I ended up going cross country through an open pit coal mine! It was fun in retrospect, but put me back a few hours.
