The Ukraine

Hi all,

Myself and a few friends are planning a trip to Eastern Europe from the UK this August/Sept. We are planning to get as far as the Ukraine. Wanted to go to the Western corner and look around the Carpathians then head back. The route, still very much in development, goes, UK, Holland, Berlin, Krakow, The Ukraine, Slovakia, Czech, Germany, France, UK.

Wanted to know if anyone had been to the Ukraine, what it is like getting in. Any tips on which border crossings to take, wherther its worth going into the Ukraine or not, road conditions etc etc.

Any help that people may have is much appreciated.

Also any must see/do's on route.

Thanks

Your questions are rather vague, so it is hard to say very much...but will try.

1) Yes, I've been to Ukraine a couple of times;
2) It's easy getting in, bring all of the usual documents;
3) Not sure if it matters which border crossing to take, I've crossed a few different ones, all pretty much the same.
4) Hard to know if it is worth for you to go to Ukraine, if we don't know why you're going there? Lviv is very nice, but I wouldn't call it a must-see.
5) For road conditions, depends on what kind of bike you're on; for a GS all of them are generally OK, but some of the smaller roads are a bit rough (or actually most of them are fine until you hit a series of monster potholes). Cops can be a slight pain, I wouldn't plan on speeding much.

Most of these topics have been pretty thoroughly covered in previous threads, you should do a search and come back with more specific questions.

In general Ukraine is pretty easy, but the border crossing will probably take 1-2 hours and many parts of Ukraine are fairly boring, so really up to you if it is worth it.

Hi, and thanks for the quick reply. Sorry for being so vague (I'm new to forums). We will be riding adventure bikes (probably the Triumph Tiger 800XC) we are looking for nice interesting roads (not necessarily off-road) great scenery, interesting towns/cities etc.

We don't have that much time so was wondering if the Ukraine was difficult to get in and was going to be worth the time. I have read that it can be mainly flat and boring and the police can be quite difficult.

Would you suggest any other alternatives like staying in Slovakia and Poland or heading to Romania?

I'll look through past threads.

Also if anyone has any "must see's" on route then that would be great also

I think most of Ukraine is pretty boring. While it's not boring enough to avoid if you have to pass through it, I'm not sure if I would go out of my way either, with a couple of exceptions, like the Crimea, which is a long way from where you'll be. I've also heard that the area around the Hungarian (?) border is nice, I think around Chernigov (?), but have never been myself.

While Ukraine's border is not particularly challenging, it will involve a couple of hours in each direction, and I am not sure it is worth it, would probably rather be relaxing in southern Poland or wherever.
