The old Burmese question

England to India - Done
India to Aus - Pending

Been keeping a close eye on the political state of Burma whilst teaching in South Korea to raise funds for the second half. Aung San su chee has finally met with members of the government and the generals are making quasi diplomatic noises.

I wondered if anyone had tried for either the Indi-Burm or Burm-Thai boarders recently? I know its been a huge no no for many years with very few reports of any success, but I wanted to ask one last time before I accept that a Kathmandu - BKK flight is the only way.

Many thanks
Bryn

I tried in 2006 from KTM and was told a firm "No". I went to the Burmese embassy there. I've subscribed to this thread as I am heading there again in 2013 or 2014 with my own bike. I'll be in BKK and CM next Feb and will be poking around the border area on a rented scoot to see if passage is possible from Thailand, from where I'll be coming in 2013-14

Well as far as I read, it's 1 person out of 100 that made it. I'll keep a close watch on this thread as I'll be heading that way soon, going Thailand to India (4wd not bike sadly). My only other option would be a cargo from Bangkok and possibly miss out on Bengladesh and go to India directly instead.

I met a young dude (member of the HUBB but forgot his name) three years ago in Melbourne who rode his 400cc from Swiss to Australia, and made it through Burma (though I recall he crossed both borders illegally and rode as fast as he could).

It's likely the political regime allows more and more people in with the recent "Aung San Suu Kyi" episode but you never know, it may have the opposite effect.

Anyone has info, please post ahead, the HUBB community needs a route across South East Asia :scooter:

Aung San Suu Kyi is still doing here thing and I'm hearing good vibrations coming up from Burma atm. But there are still many hurdles to cross

BBC News - Obstacles lie ahead in Burma's bid for reform

If anyone gives the boarder a go from the East or West please post and let everyone know

If the context of this is ´independent travel from India to Thailand, or v.v., through Burma, with your own vehicle´, then unfortunately I think that could be an understatement.

Even if some real change would happen in Burma (and are these recent news really proof of that, or just the military junta playing some kind of game, to get aid money, or something – remember, they´ve clinged to power for over 40 years, and during that time, the country has been almost as withdrawn as North Korea?) then it could still take them quite a while, until they were ready to open their borders to overlanders..........
But I would really love to be wrong on this!!

Also remember, if you think of giving it a go, that even approaching the Burmese border from India could be a handful, with the required permits, etc.

edit.
Admittedly a bit old thread (but the situation regarding oveland-travel might not have changed so much - I´d be surprised if there were more than 10 travellers to achieve this with their own vehicles within the past decade, but here is one (or actually two)):
