Thailand to Sweden on KTM and No Planning..
 

Hello you all.
I just bought a KTM630 and must drive to Sweden from Phuket within 6 weeks. Going alone and have no plan at all. No time to spend and no gear.
Must be in Sweden before midsummer/ end of June. Any route is ok!
Very experienced traveller and biker but but to much info on the webb.
All simple and easy advice is appreciated. I know all of carnet, medicin, licence etc but cant make up my mind on a good route... China, Mongolia, Russia, Baltics or Burma, India, Iran, Turkey.... Bringing no tents, no camping gear and limited spares and tools/ travel light and easy. I can see that many have half their houses along including 10 pairs of socks.....8 tshirts etc. Why? It costs less than 0,5 Euro to wash.... and 1 Euro to eat simple and local food.

A good start might be to find out how to pass China or Burma.

well I have a visa for multi entry to China since long and good solid invitation letters. Burma should be easy/ some cash at the border and good smiles maybe. or..

Nothing is impossible but one thing is to have a visa for China, it’s another issue to enter with a motorbike, unless you are a part of a guided expensive tour.

A few years ago I checked up the Burma-situation but I didn’t find any openings, keep us informed if you do!

...and when they smile back and say "No!", what then? Fly you and bike to Nepal/India and carry on from there - get Iran sorted first, though? Once into Turkey it'll be plain sailing (as we say in England!).

ok, ok. then I sort out Burma with ease.. no problems as I can see on other pages. Iran also ok as I can see.
Apply for visa then to around 5 countries. Ok
Aksed the local welder to make me some good bags and stainless steel protection parts for the bike. ok he said and cost around 200 USD for all of the bike.... sounds ok. some lights, horn, extra parts, new tires and brakes maybe, serve engine and gearboxin 2 weeks. find some suitable clothes.
should work fine. Turkey and on is a cake.

Ah, the completely free world of motorcycle touring!! No problems, no difficult border crossings, no officials giving you a hard time, no countries denying entry with your own vehicle... Just draw a line on the map and go. Or even better, just get on the road, and see where it takes you. Aint it a beauty to travel this way!?

Thats how it should be but my wife and 3 kids hardly approve.....
Tomorrow the bike comes from bangkok/ unseen by me but pictures looks good. Asked around for info of Carnet and info coming from Sweden. Insurance issues on Monday. Visa questions to some countries on Tuesday and start fixing the improvement on the bike on Thursday. Should take a week to fix the boxes, service, change all bad parts and some tools for the bike. Looking for some clothes to wear this week and GPS etc.
2 weeks and I am done.
Should be good enough and if Visa, Carnet some Insurance is fine I fill up and leave. Issues?

Wow, when i arrived at the Burmese border with only 3 pairs of socks, my toothy smile and a twenty dollar bill peaking from my top pocket i just got directions to Kathmandu Airport... with no smiles and no twenty dollar bill...! Good luck my friend but please post how you make it through so that the route can be then oficially opened again for the rest of us. Many thanks

I think I can speak for everybody reading this post before and after me when I say good luck and PLEASE!!!!!! let us know about A.China B. Burma, and for us yankees. C. Afganistan, Pakistan, and Iran.

No need for gear or parts as long as you have duct tape and a helmet.
