Temporary departure from a country

The 4wd RTW trip I’m planning will be a multi-year one and I’d like to do it on, say, a 10/2 basis (ie, 10 months away, 2 months at home (Sydney) to see family).

Having entered a country on a Carnet, is such “temporary” absence from the relevant host country permitted? Air travel back to Oz, of course.

All/any advice will be much appreciated.
