Tashanta to UlaanBaatar - choice route

Hi all,

Just wondering whether north or south is the route of choice. I'm hoping it will be stunning and unique. Does either vary on terrain...

You dont have to limit yourself to one or the other. You can cross between the two easily enough. There are more than two "roads" across Mongolia.

Much of the Southern route skirts the edge of the Gobi - yet the western end, near Olgiy is very mountainous and there are some very attractive side roads through the mountains.

Seriously, buy yourself a good map, and have a look at what kind of terrain appeals to you, what roads / routes are available then you can decide what route to take. If you just pick north route or south route, then you are cutting off huge swathes of Mongolia that may be interesting to you. Its a vast region - 2000 km from the border to UB. Like London to the Ukraine. As you might expect, there is a very wide variety of terrain in such a vast area.
