Suggestions wanted for traveling north from Oaxaca Mexico
I;m currently in Merida (Yucatan), heading north to Alaska. I'm heading next to Chiapas, then Oaxaca. I'm looking for ideas on places to visit and great routes after Oaxaca. I'll need to enter the US in California to head up the west coast. Other than that, I have five weeks to explore.
What were your favorite places?

Espinazo del Diablo (highway 40) from Mazatlan to Durango. The "Devil's Spine" is a gnarly, twisty road through the mountains. When I passed through in March of 2010 they were blasting through a toll road. So you need to inquire locally to see how much of the original road is still intact.
