China is the difficult one. To do it "legaly", you need permits fom 6 or 7 departments in EACH province you travel through, plus a numberplate and temporary driving license. About €350 for the first province, Xinjiang, (plus the visa cost), and then the same again for each province - maybe not the license and plate, don't know... and that will be in each direction.

Start saving:-))

Route Spain> Lao

Hi I will be trying the same in 2008 except I plan to get into China via Mongolia. I have ridden U.K. to Vladivostok so a fair bit will be on the same/similar route though the experience will be different I'm sure. I am hoping that with the Olympics in 2008, foriegn travellers may be accomodated a little more, I dont fancy the 2000 plus USD fees. If you search the "whats the deal with China" post you will see some people believe winging it is possible and once in travel is less hassle than you may believe. I will mail the hotmail.com contact mentioned in the "whats the deal with China"post but not till next year as I think the situation is fluid and may change for the better in the next 12 months. Keep in touch...I plan riding an xt600 and may be in company with another xt600.

Regards Jimmy
