'Rough Guide' do great waterproof and tear-proof maps for most countries there at a decent scale. They were the best one's I found. Any paper maps you buy will fall to bits very quickly if you're using them a lot.

If I remember correctly you have a pretty great Map shop somewhere in Boulder?

Check out ITMB from Vancouver...I've used their maps in Central America last year, through Mexico to Panama and back, and for that part were very good...but as noted above, don't know if they make them laminated or in any way water/tear resistant. I also bought 5 maps for the southern continent, NE, NW, S, Patagonia and TDF...seem very detailed, but as of yet, I can not testify since I haven't been there yet.

good luck.

Thanks for the advice, waterproof maps will definitely come in handy. Would anyone suggest GPS mapping systems to bring along?

LA to Hunduras

Going LA to Honduras and found decent maps at local Barnes and Noble, suplimented by Lonely planet guide and a GPS system.

I bought a refurn Quest 2 (Waterresistant, designed for morotcycles) on E-bay for a few hundred $$ and purchased the world GPS software...to at least help know where I am on the map!

Roughguide maps are very good! I have good experience with them in Mexico and South america.

The fact that they are plastic, as mentioned before, only makes them even more attractive.

I started out with the IMTB maps, but found them incomplete and inaccurate. For S. America, I used the "Atlas de Rutas" , put out by Firestone. Much better. About the size of a thick magazine. I bought mine at a news stand in Salta Argentina. I am told Toyota does a good SA atlas as well, but I wasn't able to find that one.

all this talk about C and S America has got my wheels turning for a trip. Has anyone done the ride from the top of mexico to TDF? How long is a "reasonable" time to allow for the trip?

What is TDF? I see it all the time and I assume it's something to do with the bottom of argentina?

Yep, Tierra Del Fuego is the island at the very bottom of South America. And very nice it is too.

I'm interested in times from top of Mexico to TDF as well. Planning a trip for next year, but need to think ahead how much time I'll need off.
