South Carolina to Guat and back! NEED RECOMMENDATIONS
 

OK GUYS,

I need your experienced help.
My tentative plan is to cross at Matamoros travel through Tampico,Papantla,Veracruz,Villahermosa,Palenque,Sa n Cristobal de la Casas,Puerto Escondido, Acupulco,PV, and Mazatlan then cross through Durango, Torreon, Monterrey and back to Matamoros.
Spending extra days wherever I like it along the way.

If any of you guys have must see spots along this path, please make those suggestions as this is my first trip to Mexico on the bike.
Also if you have recommendations for places to stay along my travel path it would be much appreciated.
I'll be riding an 09' weestrom, so mostly paved roads please.

Take the time to go across the border into Guatemala to visit Tikal. It is one of the most impressive Incan ruins, and worth the visit.

That's the kind of recommendations I was hoping to get here.

Check out Real de Catorce, which is a small former silver mining town just south west of Saltillo (near monterrey).

Even though your route doesn't take you near it, my favorite city in Mexico is Guanajuato.

If you go through Houston, TX, you can crash in my guest room.

Just make sure that you buy the Guia Roji. They are the best maps you can find of Mexico and Guatemala. You can find them on amazon.com

Your route sounds okay, lots of stuff to see

Just giving you a heads up on a scam by some transito cops in Altamira the town right next to Tampico on the north side of the airport as you come in on Mex 180. These guys ride their beat in the main street on Hond bikes with no license plates .
It seems that Tamaulipas has a rule on the books which states that motorcycles may ony travel in the right lane on multilane streets and highways. Passing is permitted.
Oooookaaay'... so early last month I was cruising into town at a good legal clip in the left lane passing all the slugs ,buses and right turn makers when a transito cop on a bike motions me to pull over. The first thing he sez was that I was NOT speeding but I was breaking the law by staying in the passing lane, where I would need to be any way to make the left turn coming up at the exit for bypassing downtown. He even showed me the rule in his book of rules. And the fine would be $30, and hand over license por favor, to be collected manana when paying the fine. No way was I going to give him the license and waste time. As you can gues the conversation turned to options of on the spot payment , in which case $8 would suffice. Then I asked for a receipt of the ticket but he was not going to give me one, of course not , it was a dummy and the money stays in his pocket. So, I get out me digital camera ask to see the ticket and take a picture of it. Now I have his name, badge number and the ticket info which clearly states that one colour goes to the cop, one to the office and one to the ''infractor''
i Di no a la corupcion ! There will be a letter of complaint going to the DF ..... maybe it will do a bit of good....maybe

Thanks for the warning!!! Again that's the kind of things I need peoples help with. I think my timeline is fine, there's really only 4 or 5 towns I think that will get multiple days.

Chiapas, Mexico
 

Take time for beautiful Chiapas. See colonial San Cristobal de las Casas, Comitan, El Sumidero, even Tuxtla the capitol. Then head north to see Aguas Azules (AMAZING!) and Palenque (Mayan center). We loved that area so much, we spent 3 years there! :D

The ruins at Tikal are Mayan, not Incan.

On topic though..that seems like quite a fun trip you're planning. i wont be that way until september but good luck to you.
