South America Trip

I'm planning a trip to South America next year. What time of the year is best for the weather? Any help will be appreciated.

Not sure how far South you want to go, but November to March would be the best to get a good temperature on Ushuaia, not get too much rain, neither too much wind.

going south

I am planning my trip so as to depart from Houston on or about January 17, 2009, so as to hopefully avoid the rainy season everywhere and beat the snow in patagonia

Starting mid Jan in Houston sonds tight. It's quite a way down to Ushuaia... I was there beginning of February and the weather was fine & stable. But summer is short there, so I wouldn't risk later than March.

Sounds to me like you would have to move fast. January is good for Mexico, Central America, Argentina, but you can't be in all places at the same time. Rainy season in Brazil is roughly Nov. to May (depending on area). Equatorial countries are dry during U.S. summer, wet during our winter. If you would indicate how much time you have, a route could be planned that would be fairly warm and dry.

Thanks to everyone for your replys. I'm just in the beginning stages of planning, not sure how much time I will have, job, wife and such (: I do know that when I go I don't want time to be a factor.

Been there

Would love to answer any questions you have about your trip. I lived 25 years in Peru (coast, jungle and mountains), 3 years in Chiapas, Mexico, and have travelled to Costa Rica, Panama, Equador, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile.

Last summer my 17 yr old son and I did over 6,000 km on XR250s Peru-Brazil-Bolivia-Peru called "Around the Block 2007. My web site: Around the Block 2007 |

We traveled in June to Aug for this trip, but I have motoed all over Peru in every season. Am organizing "Around the Block 2009" for a 40 day trip all over Peru for a large group.

Martin, I'll take you up on a loosely formatted route to TDF on the west and back up the Atlantic coast. Must hit the Welsh village in Argentina and take the boat trip up the Amazon to Manaus?

Start beginning of Oct from Seattle, then have 6 months. Must have regular stops for tea (Brit thing).

I have a garmin zumo 550 but can't seem to locate any s/w for South America official or not, any thoughts?
