Show route on map.
Just a quick one,
How would a less than computer savvy guy/girl make a map with his/her planned route on it. Would drawing it on a map and scanning it to a computer be the simplest? Cheers Jessedylan |

How big is the route? How much detail do you want? Is it all on roads?
Have you tried viewing your route in google maps? You can set start and stop points, then drag the route any which way you please on there, then print it out. |

All what Dave said, and, if you use MS, you can use the "Snipping Tool" and safe the highlighted/marked section as .jpg for posting or including it into a slide show etc.

I second the suggestion to use Google Maps. It has the advantage that you can easily share your routes, you can always change it, view it on many devices, from other computers, and much more.
- If you have a Google account, sign in and go to maps.google.com - On your left it says "My Places", click on that and and then on "Create new map" - Now there are three little icons in the upper left corner of the map: A hand, a balloon and a zigzag line. - You can use the line to draw, well, lines. And you can choose whether to draw straight lines, or along roads. Use the balloon to create placemarks, like for a hotel, place of interest, whatever. You get the it. Now the interesting thing is, you can share this map with whoever you choose. Click on "Link" on the top right an you will get a URL you can share with people that will direct them to that exact map. Have a look at a rough map of my upcoming tour this summer that I made so I could share it with friends on Facebook: Sommer 2011 - Google Maps Cheers, Julian

Yes, maps.google.com is great for doing at least your preliminary planning. It will give you decent general maps, distances, and some idea as to where the major roads are.

Actually, it's not too shabby on the road either. On an Africa trip I had saved Google Maps tiles on my Nokia phone for offline use (with this program: Mobile GMaps), and they were pretty decent. Expecially for cities. I can never have too many maps, but that's just me.
That being said, I don't believe in planning the route too much in advance. It all looks different once you're on the ground.

Hi,
With Google Earth and Google Maps you have the risc of geting into trouble because of copyright resons (if you include the map somewhere on your webpage etc. insted of onely linking to it). lässt Google seine Kunden in die Abmahnfalle laufen? | Basic Thinking Same with scaning a map which belongs to someone else. Rather drow your own map. If you dont know how to use a computer use a normal pen and then take a foto of your own map. You could also try using GPX Editor and create a file, you just click here, click there, waypoint here, track there, save the file, upload to Google maps I think (Not sure) or as I do use with a wordpress plugin, which is pretty straightforward....
Check out my map on my site.... If you are interested and need a bit more detail....then just let me know. |
