Shetland trip Summer 2010

I want to visit Shetland this summer as it is the only place in UK which I haven't yet visited.
There doesn't seem to be much on HU about it.
Has anyone been recently?
I need to find out the best ferry routes. I believe there is a ferry from Aberdeen which may be best since I have been to Orkney.
Can anyone suggest a good 2 weeks to go this summer (2010) to give as many activities to see. Folk Festivals etc and anything else of local interest?
I wait to hear.
I am new to HU but I have travelled on my motorcycles to many countries including most of Europe, USA, Canada, Peru, New Zealand, Morocco.
I currently ride a Kawasaki Versys "Adventure" which I modified to make it suitable for my trip to Morocco and the Sahara last October, on very rough tracks much of the time. It is now a lighter more maneageable twin cylinder go (almost) anywhere bike which suits my advancing years much better than a typical big and heavy Big Trail Bike, yet is still superb for long distance on tarmac.

SIMMER DIM RALLY bikers rally June

The ferry from Aberdeen is by far the most relaxing way to go, and if your not overly bothered about privacy then you can sleep in the lounge save heaps on the cabin cost.
I have only been up there on a bicycle (pre motorbike days) so no idea for motorbike. I camped at the side of the road and on a beach, and when I went into town for something to eat they were surprised to see the man on the bike was a woman on her own. I was pointed in the direction of a sheltered beach to camp for the night.
The fish college in Scalloway, and apparently Maryfield House Hotel on the Island of Bressay is a great place to eat.
Shetland is on my wish list to visit

Thanks for the info Milimut.
How long ago did you go?
It seems if I go to the summer festival, (forgot its name) there is a 30% discount on the ferry. That will help.

The "Simmer Dim", yes a 30% discount. Not sure if you can still get tickets to the bike rally though. (Got ours :-) )

Hi Bruce.
No joy with the tickets for the Bike Rally but I am going anyway arriving 22nd June and staying till 5th July.
If any of you Rally guys are still around on the 22nd or later I hope to bump into you.
I will also be staying at Saxa Vord on Unst for a couple of days and going to a couple of the Hamefarin events in the Clickimin Centre.
All I ask is decent weather.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
