Anytime, although the days are warmish even in winter in Cairo its a really cold ride through Europe. But you can ride all year round in Egypt easily. Avoid the height of summer maybe?

hi, sorry i cant give you any advice but this is a trip i`d like to do myself ( i live in scotland too) but when i looked into it, getting my vehicle into egypt was really expensive, i think the carnet was five times the vehicle value plus a load of other hasles. I`d love to hear how you get on and if you have any advice for me please feel free ! What route do you intend to take? My vehicle is an ex army 4x4 truck which i am converting to an expedition type camper. I tried to send a private message but i was blocked and not sure if i can post my e-mail address hear...........cheers.

Hola folks!

I am just back from making this trip. I was in Egypt around about mid October and it was HOT (although I accept I am a Scot and am used to sub zero temperatures in summer!). The Med coast doesn't get too hot, but in and around Cairo I was sweating if the speed dropped below 50mph.

As an aside, the carnet for Egypt is 800% at present. The advance paperwork isn't too bad but the border can be an ordeal. I was there for hours and was getting a bit pissed off by the time I made it through. If you are interested you can read about the entire trip here:-

If I can help with any more info then let me know.

When not to go

Hi, we know when not to go, we were there in Egypt last June. It's just bearable although not overly enjoyable in the North but as soon as you start heading towards Luxor and Aswan the heat gets horrible. Add to this the infuriating conveys you are likly to have to take anywhere outside Cairo it becomes very frustating very quickly. This is all personal experience and people have differant tolerances to heat (and beurocracy) but 35 - 40 degrees in bike gear I start getting a little irritable. I was a very reliable thermometer according to my partner.

Still on the upside it will still be cooler than Sudan. We were thier in July!?! (Why didnt we listen!?!?!?!? :-)
