santiago, chile to rio de janeiro, brazil

Hi,
My friend and I are planning a 5 1/2 week trip in April(Santiago via RN 7 to Buenos Aires, crossing the border to Montevideo and staying along the coast to Rio de Janeiro). We are also planning to buy the bikes in Santiago. If you have any advise on best way to purchase bikes, route, terrain, lodging, border crossing, must see locations, places to avoid, etc., I would GREATLY appreciate it. Also, is 5 1/2 weeks enough time? I think it is roughly 2500 mi. Thank you in advance.

Eddie

Time sounds reasonable - BUT - what happens in Rio? Sell the bikes, turn around and return or?

Selling the bikes could be very difficult to impossible. see http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000147.html for more, also http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000012.html

Afraid I can't help on the rest, haven't been that way myself. But I'm sure someone out there has!

One tip I can give is regarding the ferry from Buenos Aires to Uruguay.

There are 2 ferries , one to Montevideo and another to Colonia de Sacremento , which is shorter and cheaper . You can drive around the river deltas to Uruguay but it will take a whole day . On the other hand the distance will work out cheaper for fuel than the ferry .

On the other hand ( wait ,how many hands is that now ?) further devaluation of the peso may make it cheaper to take the ferry than drive . When I was there in Feb the ferry to Colonia ( a nice place ) would have cost me and the scooter 80 pesos - I drove it for 60 ( + a whole day ) .

hello, you have many ways to do your travel, on or off road, crossing Argentina, by Mendoza, San Luis, Cordoba, Santa Fe, Entre Rios, "Cataratas del Iguazu", or By Ferry (Uruguay), road Uruguay, the total distance its near 3000 miles.
Have a nice travel !!!
