Does anyone have experience with driving jeddah, ferry, port sudan, khartoum lately?

There is a ferry/boat that takes vehicles according to Footprints' west Africa book. It runs from Eritrea to Port Sudan to Jeddah and then to Egypt. We are also looking at an alternative route like that. Been to 2 Suadi embasies and both said no problem for a transit visa. You have to get it in the neighbouring country. You also need the visa for the country you are going to next. We are heading north. Can't go into Egypt (South African Carnet).
