Hi all

I have an atlas from TonyP but I would love to know if theres a sheet map covering the lower half of Russia ( I know it will probably be 3-4 map sheets)

Also require a Mongolian map.

Any advice or sellers would be appreciated

Cheers

Try Stanfords Maps in London. I got a reise map of Mongolia and the Russian road atlas, recommended by Walter Colebatch, for my trip this year. Both look pretty good.

Hi Stephen, which Russian road atlas did Walter recommend? Thanks

The only sheet maps I see here are really 'wall maps' or posters showing all Russia. They measure about 2 feet by 4 or 5 feet and show either political or physical detail.

There are quite a number of Road Atlas books like the one I have carried back to UK for 20+ HUBBers. They covered all Russia except some more remote northern areas.

Road Atlases are really a matter of personal preference. Colebatch prefers one with clearer, brighter, contrasting colours. The one I prefer and supplied has less bright colours but has more topographical detail for most areas.

There are better (more detailed and possibly more accurate) Road Atlases for just 'European' Russia which covers from Karelia south to the Black Sea/Georgia but only goes east to the Urals - the end of Europe. For most of this area there are also detailed larger scale city or region maps.

East of the Urals mapping is less accurate or up to date. There are folded sheet maps available for some specific Republics or areas within the RF, but they are not part of a comprehensive countrywide series and tend to be surrounding cities rather than for finding tracks in the wild.

I will probably be coming to UK in about 6 weeks and could search for and bring specific requests.
Air Mail Post from here takes just about as long!
I can, from time to time, get friends to take them earlier and mail them in UK or other west Europe countries.
As before, all I would ask, when maps are received I be paid the cost of the material and mailing. (Disappointingly, one HUBBer let me down but that will not spoil it for others, or change my life!).

Another rare occasion where I'll have to disagree with Tony P; at least in Moscow you can buy some excellent road maps showing large swathes of Russia; some show a couple of regions, others show larger areas, such as everything between Moscow and, say, Kazan. There are a couple of brands, or series, which I have seen. I have only seen such maps in a few bookstores in Moscow, rather than in gas stations, which usually only have atlases.

Tony, come by with my book and I'll show you a couple of these maps and reveal my secret source!

I should clarify that the maps I mentioned only cover European Russia. For Siberia, other than atlases I have only seen maps covering a couple of individual regions, which frankly are not very helpful. For a few regions I could not find any maps at all, and the atlas pages are very large-scale.

Will the above atlas be good for Sibera or can you recommend anything for me?

Personally I've never really seen a very good map or atlas for Siberia, but if you are sticking to the Trans-Siberian Highway, you don't really need a very good map, since there is only one road.

The Atlas shown is perfectly Ok for travel across Russia including Siberia - used it last year from Vladivostock - you just need to learn the Russian Cyrillic language to make it easier and I have to say that the alphabet was much easier to learn than I expected - got the hang of it within 3 weeks using a downloaded i-pad app.
