RTW, Which way to go?

I'd always thought i'd just ride south from Montana to CA/SA, then ship over to Jo'burg for Africa, (Capetown to Cairo), but... maybe I shud ship bike first from USA (LA?) to Manilla, then head south to Malaysia/ New Guinea/Oz/NZ, then proceed back up thru Indonesia/Thai/Camb/Viet, hence ship to India/Nepal? Already been thru central/south america. I looked on shipping the bike but cant find anyone who has shipped USA to Phillipines. any advice? I know theres a ferry from Phiols to Malaysia. Is there one from Borneo into Darwin?

Tough choices, my first question would be when are you planning on going? Depends on the timing, but avoiding the winter and the relevant wet seasons would be one big consideration.

No international ferry routes to Australia, you will probably need to freight the bike. Generally there are very few international lines in that part of the world. Even though there are lots of routes inside Indonesia, for example.

its (semi) Official!

yep, the more i dream the more i decide to begin my RTW by riding from Montana to LAX (?) and shipping the bike to Manilla. Ive already been all around CA/SA and that direction I would quickly finish the most expensive overseas shipment, see somewhere totally new, and blow lots of money at first by diving in Phils/Malay/Indo/Oz. But i still need to find some other mototraveler whos flown his/her bike from USA to Manilla. I havent heard back from any one, or Phil airlines, but i've got months to wait yet.
Has anyone else toured around Phils Islands with their bike? Ferries take them surely i bet. are suzuki parts avail there? ( not that my Wee will ever let me down)

Sorry, I can´t offer you much on shipping to Manila. It´s probably not very common to freight vehicles there (Bangkok & Kuala Lumpur seem to be the most frequent destinations on that area – if it is airfreight, that you want).

But you´re probably gonna need a freight agent anyway, to get the Dangerous Goods certificate, that you´ll need. And I would budget at least 2000 USD for airfreight from US to the Philippines. So, get in contact with your local freight forwarders, and I´m sure you will soon have a better idea about the costs, etc.

Sending by sea might also be possible, but I have absolutely no idea, how complicated and possibly expensive it could be at the receiving end! Do note, that Port Klang (Malaysia, near Kuala Lumpur) seems to get good reports from those, who have sent there by sea.

Shipping is almost always some sort of PITA, sometimes more, sometimes less... but when you´ve done it once, then you´ll be much wiser about how to do it again!
