Route Planning for Summer - Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro, etc

Hello,

Last year, you guys gave me some great sights to see on my Summer vacation. Which was thru, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia.

This year we are planning on a 4 week trip in August hopefully, leave dependant. We are going to head down thru France, Switzerland, Austria, etc to Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, etc.

At the moment this is our rough idea of a route.

We are still researching paperwork, insurance etc. It seems fairly straight forward, Visas at the border, green card from insurance company and insurance at the border where this is not covered or possible. We have International Driving Permits already.

Need to check on vaccines.

In the meantime would you be willing to give use some advise on places not to miss, places to avoid and any other general advice?

Thanks for the help as usual.

Dan

Yeah, sorry I forgot that, I have an idea of a place I would like to visit in Bosnia.

I see your location is Serbia? Do you have any recomendations?

If you go through Romania I recommend you use road 7C (Transfagarasan), instead of going through the Valley of river Olt. It's a beautiful high mountain pass, closed between November-June I think. You can find the road by linking Cartisoara with Curtea de Arges on google maps. You might want to stop at the top and visit Balea Lake and maybe eat at the lodge next to it.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip, that looks fantastic. We'll see if we can encorporate it.

We are trying to get a balance between long stops (2 nights) and not too excessive mileage at the moment the route is over 4000 miles, I would like to be less than 4000 ideally or there abouts.

If we don't make it this year, we will try for another.

Any more ideas greatfully received!

Cheers

Dan

HUBBers in the UK may have seen the Transfagarasan on Top gear - they concluded it was the 'worlds best driving road'

I was hoping to tick it in a few weeks until I realised it would be shut....

Guys, I am planning a Euro trip and have heard that Bulgaria is not really safe for motorcyclists(interms of Fake Police and Barricades demanding money etc)

Can any of you confirm this?

Also what are my other options to enter Europe from Turkey apart from entering Bulgaria?

I've just got back from Bulgaria and it was fine, there are a lot of police about, normally at the exit to towns/villages but the locals are pretty good flashers. We got stopped once, they checked my license and that was all.

We found some absolutely brilliant roads in Romania, Bulgaria and the Czech - will dig out the map this weekend and note down which ones they were. Also there is quite a nice holiday/hippy town on the Black Sea in Romania about 3 km north of the BG border, we slept on the beach with no problems but it was 'out-of-season' - it has two campsites and several lodges/B&B type places.

There is also a fantastic guy who lives near Brasov in Romania, he has several spare building including a really nice cabin he built last year, space for quite a few bikes, speaks good English and is in general a total legend! I have details at home I will try and dig up this w/end.

Thanks Henry, looking forward for the details :)

It would be great if you put up a route map of your journey.
