Route from Calais to Split, Croatia

I am planning an 18 day round trip from UK to Split, Croatia in May 2005.

Does anyone have a good route, avoiding most motorways (other than to buzz around major cities if necessary) from Calais to Split? I am thinking about taking five days to get there, eight days in and around Split and then five days back.

We are going on sports-tourers, Blackbird, Pan-European, CBR 600, VFR etc.

Any good recommendations on places to stay, things to see etc. etc. much appreciated.

Hi Nasher,

I reckon a good route would be across the smaller Swiss passes, down through the Italian lakes to Verona. Then over to Trieste where you could take the coast road round Istria - lots of beautiful harbours. We crossed onto Cres and Losinj taking a ferry to Zadar where we changed to aferry travelling to Split. (Left Losinj early evening - arrived Split early next morning.

From here you could get to Dubrovnik and/or explore the islands of Hvar and Korcula. I'm sure there'd be an overnight ferry back to Trieste or Ancona to save time on the way back.

Very freindly people and recommend the Pensions.

Have a good trip!

Nasher,
I advise you to spend your eight days visiting some islands such Cres, Losinj, Pag, Hvar, Brac and Korcula. Also, there are several national parks in souranding and along your way; Krka, Paklenica, Plitvicka jezera. Go on Biokovo mountain road, it is asplalt all the way to top ( 1762 m ), you can see half of Adriatic from top if weather allows you. You can spend a day to visit Dubrovnik, probably the most known town in our country. Could be nice to connect some of those destinations in route to and back from Split. Do not go on new motorway, it is very boring.
Regards,
AnteK
