romania

hi martin,
things i need to know
how many persons are traveling and expexted dates of arriving at the roamnia boarder and how many days you have allocated to travel each country.
so are you going to hammer the motorways to get to hungaria?
from the austrian boarder to romanian should take about 4 hours add 1 hr if you like to make stopps.
in hungaria i would follow the E60 after budapest to the romanian boarder heading for oradea. (this gets you off the boring motorway. but as in austria dont forget to buy the the road tax last 3 or 7 days no more than 5 euro).
from oradea head to cluj napoca E60 this way you are on the right side to hit moldova if you want.
if you need can send step by step to get you to brasov.
reason for using the E60 better bike riding roads and not like traveling via sibiu on E68 which is the major truck route plus have heard the are major road works which will delay you.
what to you waant see and do? castles, churches, places of interest or just ride good moutain roads.
whilst planing routes and time/ distance, calculate aprox 80kph/ 60mph its a good rule of tumb to use as it inlcudes stops for fuel and food.
there are no motorway on your route in romania and between each city the roads are linked by hundreds of little villages so speed limits are between 50/70 kph. your good for 10kph above but after that beware of the police with radar.
Brasov is a good place to base yourself for a few days as eveything worth seeing is just a days ride out you dont have to carry all your kit with you just helmet and jacket.
the transfrgarasan highway is a must and there is a glassier at the top which runs into a lake. in america there is a road called the dragons tale nothing compared to this road and it will be open the dates you travel. the history books tell it was the army that built the road but it was political prisioners, gypsies, and children and where buried there if they died, so a bit like the road of bones in russia.
there is the salt mines and salt lake the mine caverns are big probably fit a cathederal in and again cut by hand using forced labour. draculars castle and king carols palace are a good day out and again use the mountain roads to get there. brasov is a good day loads of bars and resturants and the black church so called because all the invaders have tried to but it down, plus a good place to stretch the legs and get of the bike for a day.
after that would recommed a days ride to vama veche a village located on the beach of thre black sea, layed back biker friendly cheap food and drinks camp on the beach or stay in reasoble price hotel, usualy visited by the young person who like to party on the beach. its only about 20-30km from the bulagrian boarder and a 6hr ride so perfec distance to stop. in bulagria definatly go to varna and nesbar
varna has a good 3 star hotel on the beach 30 euro for two including breafeast we stay there. the resort has termal mineral string pools which thet say have great healing properties. (didnt to me any harm).
you have not mentioned if you are camping, hotels or both this will help me so i can recommend some place especialy if you have a budget per stop.
keep my up to date on your progress will give you my tel number before you leave so we can keep in touch.
regards.
mike.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the detailed response!

I'm currently waiting on a potential buddy to confirm the dates we can leave (so 2 of us). At the moment it looks like only a few days in Romania, entering from Hungary (after zooming there as fast as poss from UK) and leaving into Serbia to then go onto Kosovo. I would like to stop in Bucharest, but as for sight seeing I'd rather ride through the roads I've heard so much about and perhaps stop for lunch along the way at conveniently scenic/historic places.

Taking light camping gear, enough for a night's wild camp.

It's an ambitious itinerary that is basically aiming to visit as many countries as possible in 2-3 weeks, to get a taster of where to return to and stay next time :)

I'll let you know in the next few days what our dates are - again thank you!:mchappy:

Hi martin

My mate and I are meeting tonight to discuss our trip. We're going to Romania too. Leaving 26th July for about three weeks, but we haven't decided on our route yet. When are you going, maybe meet up for a beer.

Once you get to Romania you won't want to leave!!!!!!!! IT'S FABULOUS. Bran Castle is a must, Brasov's nice but nowt special - Sighisoara is magical, and you can have dinner in Vlad Dracule's house (or at least have a glass of red wine). Hope you have a great time wherever you end up.:thumbup1:
